Building intercultural awareness

Sometimes, as language teachers, we focus too much on grammatical structures and language skills and very little, or nothing, on building intercultural awareness in our students.
Intercultural awareness isn’t only built by providing knowledge of other cultures but also by promoting intercultural values and fostering a new intercultural attitude in students. This involves:
– becoming aware of stereotypes and the role they play in any given culture
– becoming aware of our cultural differences but also, and most importantly, of our similarities, what brings us together as human beings.
– embracing diversity and all that it involves
