Reading practice in a foreign language

Which is or which should the main objective in the reading of a variety of texts in the target language be? Do we read to learn grammar or to learn vocabulary or to do both? Or is it that students read or should read texts that enable them to write better?

Most of our students falsely believe that whenever you read in the target language (the language that you’re learning) you do it so to learn new structures and expressions.

Unfortunately, or fortunately, this is not so. The fundamental objective of reading in class is the training you get in that particular skill, i.e, reading comprehension practice. This is why it is necessary to vary the type of texts that we expose our students to because we’re training them to do precisely that, to be able to identify different styles, formats and registers to be able to understand them with the same level of ease.

Reading practice is undoubtedly fundamental for language learning but it’s important and necessary for our students to become aware of  its objective in the classroom so as not to be misled by wrong preconceptions.

¿Cuál es o debería ser el objetivo principal en la lectura de diversos textos en la lengua meta? ¿Se lee para aprender gramática o para aprender más vocabulario o ambos? ¿O acaso los alumnos leen o deberían leer textos que les faciliten su posterior expresión escrita?

La mayoría de nuestros alumnos tienen la falsa creencia de que siempre que se lee en la lengua meta (la lengua que se está aprendiendo) se lee con el propósito de aprender estructuras y expresiones nuevas.

Lamentablemente, o afortunadamente, no es así.  El objetivo fundamental de la lectocomprensión en clase es el entrenamiento en esa destreza en particular, es decir la ejercitación de la comprensión de textos. Por esta precisa razón es necesario variar los tipos de textos a los cuales exponemos a nuestros alumnos, porque los estamos entrenando precisamente para eso, para que sean capaces de identificar formatos, estilos y registros diferentes, y comprenderlos con la misma facilidad.

La práctica de la lectura es sin duda fundamental para el aprendizaje de lenguas pero es importante y necesario que los alumnos sean conscientes de cuál es su finalidad y que no se dejen guiar por preconcepciones erróneas acerca de porqué y para qué leen.
