The importance of interaction in foreign language learning

Interaction should be both the end and the means in a language learning process. It should be seen as the primary objective, as we learn languages to be able to communicate with others, and the way to achieve it.
Some linguists have confirmed that the negotiation of meaning that takes place during our interaction with another individual (a student, a native or our teacher) helps us to be aware of the gap that exists between our production/output and the foreign language grammar. This awareness enables us to adquire the language. This is why we can affirm that self-correction is the most effective way of correcting one´s mistakes. Needless to say, interacting with someone in the foreign language will definitely bring about many opportunities for self-correction.

Interacting with someone is also a great source of  oral input or listening practice, which is a key factor in language learning. There’s more information about this in my post about listening comprehension.
Some learners may be asking themselves this question: “What type of interaction is best? Interacting with another student to practice some new grammar structures or participating in a more real-life and natural type of interaction?”. Both are essential in order to learn a language. We need to go from a controlled to an uncontrolled language practice. This has also been researched extensively and a task-based methodology has been proposed. Unfortunately, most teachers prefer to work with controlled activities and forget about the importance of tasks which simulate real life interaction and communication. These are, after all, the type of situations our students will have to face in the future.
In short, interaction is key in foreign language learning. We, as teachers, should encourage students to make use of the many opportunities they have to practise the language, both online or in face-to-face conversations. Students should become aware of the possibilities that the new technological advances offer them and take advantage of that.

La interacción debería ser tanto el fin como el medio en el proceso de aprendizaje de lenguas. Debería ser visto como el objetivo principal, dado que aprendemos lenguas para comunicarnos con los demás, y la forma de lograrlo.
Algunos lingüistas han comprobado que la negociación de significado que tiene lugar durante la interacción con otros individuos (estudiante, un nativo o el profesor) nos ayuda a ser conscientes de la brecha que existe entre nuestra producción y la gramática de la lengua extranjera. Esta conciencia nos ayuda a adquirir la lengua. Es por esto que podemos afirmar que la autocorrección es la manera más efectiva de corregir nuestros errores. Demás está decir que interactuar con otra persona en la lengua meta nos ofrece muchas oportunidades para la autocorrección.
Probablemente, algunos aprendices estarán haciéndose esta pregunta: “¿Qué tipo de interacción es la mejor?¿Interactuar con otra persona para practicar nuevas estructuras gramaticales o participar en una interacción más natural, basada en la vida real?”.
Ambas son esenciales para aprender la lengua. Necesitamos ir desde una práctica controlada hacia una no controlada y libre. Esto, también, ha sido investigado de manera extensiva y se ha propuesto una metodología basada en las tareas. Desafortunadamente, muchos profesores prefieren trabajar con actividades más controladas y se olvidan de la importancia de las tareas que simulan la interacción y comunicación en la vida real. Estas son, después de todo, el tipo de situaciones a las que nuestros estudiantes se enfrentarán en un futuro.
Resumiendo, la interacción es fundamental en el aprendizaje de lenguas. Nosotros, como profesores/as, deberíamos animar a nuestros alumnos a utilizar las muchas oportunidades que tienen para practicar el idioma, tanto online como en una conversación cara a cara. Los alumnos deberían concientizarse acerca de las posibilidades que los avances tecnológicos ofrecen y sacar provecho de ellas.
