I will remember this year in a special way for various reasons, one of which is that it’s the year I’ve discovered the usefulness and importance that exchanges have. I’m referring to language exhanges but also to other numerous exchanges where one can train in a specific art/profession, exchange skills, knowledge and services.

The former ones, the conversation exchanges, can be found through language learning websites and also through time banks. These are platforms where each member advertises his or her services, what they can offer, and their needs, what they want to learn or practise.

Of course, one of the advantages of this type of transaction is not using money, something we’re too accustomed to. A commitment which is based on our motivation to learn something by offering another thing in return is assumed. It is paid with time and knowledge. In a way, this type of Exchange allows us to relate to one another from another position, maybe a more humane one. They’re not our customers, but our partners.

Another advantage is that we can agree, according to our availability, on the timetable and each meeting’s length. Also, we can suggest places where we would feel more comfortable while working together.

Perhaps, the only disadvantage (or challenge) is that, without money involved, some will not feel a strong commitment towards the activity and will be prone to be absent, cancel meetings or finalize the exchange. In these cases, it is necessary to remember why we do it, which is our motivation and to be honest with ourselves and our partners. The commitment to whatever it is that we’re learning or practising takes on a special importance in these situations.

So, from here I cheer you all to use the time banks and the exchanges. Your won’t regret it.

SPANISH: BANCOS DEL TIEMPO E INTERCAMBIOS

A este año lo recordaré de una manera especial por varios motivos. Uno de ellos es que es el año donde descubrí la utilidad y la importancia que tienen los intercambios. Me refiero a los intercambios de lenguas, pero también a numerosos otros intercambios donde uno puede formarse en una disciplina específica, intercambiar habilidades y/o conocimiento y servicios.

Los primeros, los intercambios de conversación, se pueden encontrar a través de páginas de aprendizaje y práctica de lenguas y también en los bancos de tiempo. Estos funcionan como una especie de organización donde cada miembro publicita sus servicios, lo que puede ofrecer, y sus necesidades, lo que quiere aprender o practicar, etc.

Desde ya, una de las ventajas de este tipo de transacción es el no uso del dinero, al que todos estamos ya demasiado acostumbrados. Se asume un compromiso que se basa en nuestra motivación en aprender algo ofreciendo otra cosa a cambio. Se paga con tiempo y conocimiento. De alguna manera, este tipo de intercambio nos permite relacionarnos con el otro desde otro lugar, quizá uno más humano. No son nuestros clientes, sino nuestros compañeros.

Otra ventaja es que podemos pactar nosotros mismos, según nuestra disponibilidad, nuestros horarios y la duración de cada encuentro. También, se pueden sugerir lugares donde nos sintamos más cómodos para trabajar juntos.

Tal vez, la única desventaja sea que, al no haber dinero de por medio, algunos no sentirán un compromiso muy fuerte en la actividad y serán propensos a ausentarse, cancelar encuentros o terminar con el intercambio de manera definitiva. En estos casos, es necesario recordar por qué lo hacemos, cuál es nuestra motivación, y sincerarnos con nosotros mismos y con nuestros compañeros. El compromiso con el aprendizaje cobra una importancia especial en estos casos.

Así que, desde aquí los animo a todos a que se animen a utilizar los bancos del tiempo y los intercambios. No se arrepentirán.
